The Accidental Conservationist

A Technologist’s Journey to Protect Wildlife and Wild Places

Images and reflections from my experiences as part of a small community applying technology to save what remains of the natural world

The Galleries —

Not a portfolio so much as a place to share images that capture my love of the animals and places I have had the great privilege to experience.

Landscapes

The profound beauty of the little blue marble that is our home

Wildlife

Eating, breathing, running, socializing, playing, living, life

Birds

Infinite variety in a Class of their own

Hope for the natural world is only the beginning. The hard work is acting, fundamentally changing the relationship between humans and nature.

I am often asked what conservation organizations to donate to. There are so many excellent ones that most people have never heard of. In the Wildlife Galleries, I have identified one or more organizations I know are doing incredible work specific to conserving each species. Similarly, for Birds, I identified several organizations that work to protect them. I provided links to each organization where you can donate directly. I have also made book recommendations where I know of a particularly beautiful and informative book for a Species or Family of wildlife.

A few organizations work to protect one or a small number of unique places. Here are a few of the ones I have worked with extensively and where many of the photographs were taken:

  • Conservation South Luangwa supports South Luangwa National Park in Zambia.

  • Grumeti Fund supports Grumeti Reserve in Tanzania, which also acts as a vital buffer area for Serengeti National Park.

  • Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Northern Kenya was the very first place EarthRanger was used.

  • African Parks manages 22 parks in 12 countries across Africa.

  • Gonarezhou Conservation Trust is a partnership between the Zimbabwe Parks Agency and the Frankfurt Zoological Society. Gonarezhou was the first park I visited in Africa, long before I began working in Conservation.

  • Yellowstone Forever is the official nonprofit partner of Yellowstone National. Many of the programs at Yellowstone, such as the wolf, cougar, and other species programs, couldn’t do what they do without the funding they receive through Yellowstone Forever.

  • Conserve Global delivers effective management of natural landscapes beyond national parks by providing support for the establishment of community-initiated conservancies in adjacent buffer zone areas.
