Mammals of Africa

All the animals I have included photographs of in this grouping are part of the Ungulates and Carnivores Super Order (Laurasiatheria) except Hyraxes and Hares. Hyraxes are in the same Super Order as Elephants, their closest relatives. The African Savanna Hare is in the same Super Order as Primates (Superorder Euarchontoglires) and is part of the Lagomorphs Order.

Warthogs are in the Pig (Swine) Family and part of Even-toed Ungulates.

Hyenas, Mongooses, and Civets / Genets are each in their own Family as part of the Carnivore Order.

Pangolins are in their own Order. They are also in serious trouble and are now listed as Endangered. They are, in fact, the most trafficked animal in the world.

While this grouping feels like a mixed bag of the Class Mammals, it is an opportunity to show how related wildly different species are. It is also a chance to highlight some surprises, like the connection between hippos and whales and between elephants and hyraxes. I will undoubtedly break this grouping into more groups as I have more images to include.

Both of the pangolins I have seen and photographed had been rescued from traffickers and were being habituated in preparation for being released back into the wild.
