Elephants

The Elephant Family includes the Asian and African Elephant Genera. I am lucky to have seen and photographed a critically endangered African Forest Elephant. It is so labeled in the image captions. The remaining photos are of African Savanna or Bush Elephants listed as endangered. I have not had the opportunity to photograph Asian Elephants yet.

My journey in Conservation began with elephants. The first project I was involved in was the Great Elephant Census. I'm still thrilled every time I see one of these massive animals move through the landscape. There are so many excellent organizations working to protect elephants. I have had the great privilege of working with several of them directly. Save the Elephants was involved from the beginning in the creation of EarthRanger. While with Save the Elephants, Jake Wall developed the precursor to EarthRanger. He is now the Director of Research and Conservation at the Mara Elephant Project. Jake continues to innovate new ways to apply technology for science-based Conservation.

The Elephant Crisis Fund provides well-targeted and much-needed critical funding supporting elephant conservation all over Africa.

The video quality is poor, and you may want to turn down the sound due to the loudness of the wind, but this moment - seeing a forest elephant taking a swim in the river - is such a special memory that I wanted to share it. Notice how quickly it disappears into the forest. A few steps, and it’s impossible to sit'sNotice how much smaller this full-grown adult is than his savanna cousin.
